WHAT IS PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE?

Pharmacy Professional Indemnity

As a Pharmacist you are required by the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) to hold a civil liability Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) Policy. The policy must cover you for a claim that arises from a negligent act, error or omission that you might make as a registered practicing Pharmacist. It must also have a policy limit of $20 million for each claim that might be made against you. This requirement applies to all registered Pharmacists, except those registered in the non-practicing category.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

OPTION A

Insurance via Your Employer

If you are employed you may be Employer Indemnified. This means the type of cover you have will depend on your employer’s insurance policy and the terms and conditions of your employment contract or agreement. Typically, an employer will have a policy in place that protects both the employer and employee should a compensation claim arise. However, this is not always the case and you should check with your employer to see what you are covered for.

If your employer’s policy is not AHPRA compliant, or only offers you limited cover you should consider holding your own Professional Indemnity policy. If you also practice outside of your regular place of employment in any capacity as a Pharmacist, whether you are remunerated or not – you should hold your own policy to ensure you meet AHPRA’s PII requirements for registration.

Insurance For Your Current Job

Every time you change employers, you will need to check to what extent the policy indemnifies you and if it is AHPRA compliant.

Limited Support

If you are employer indemnified, you will receive little to no individual support should a claim be made against you personally. This may result in out of pocket expenses should you have insufficient cover under your employer’s policy to cover the full costs of a claim being made against you.

OPTION B

Your Own Policy

Having your own insurance policy is an investment in your professional career. This type of policy arrangement is suitable for Pharmacists who are contractors, work in multiple Pharmacies, or anyone who wants peace of mind knowing that they are in control of their own insurance. The policy attaches to you as an individual and not a location, as if often the case with Employer indemnified arrangements.
